"2.5 Year Old Loves It!" 2009-12-28
By JennyLoving (USA)
I am a fan of LeapFrog products in general, and my toddler was thrilled to get the Tag Junior as a gift from his grandparents for Christmas. Leapfrog puts a lot of care into making educational toys that are developmentally appropriate for the little ones. Here are the pros and cons of this products, from what we've found so far.

Cons:

- It can take a while for the software you need to use to install, load, and update

- You have to undo the battery door with a screwdriver in order to connect the device to your computer

- It only holds 5 books at a time

Pros:

- It is easy for toddlers to hold and use

- There are a wide range of books available, with familiar and much loved characters

- You can update the device to say the child's name when they turn the device on or off!

- The software is easy to use

- You can track your child's learning with the software

- It reinforces skills you are probably working with your child on already...this is yet another way to prepare them for school!

- The familiarity of the characters and the colorful, engaging way the books are set up draws the little ones in so they have fun while they are learning

I would note that this is probably better suited for the 2-3 age range than the 3-4 age range. My 2 year old son has done well with his shapes, letters, numbers, colors, and other skills for quite some time before receiving this product, and I can't imagine that a 4 year old would be too interested in some of these more basic concepts. As for the littler preschoolers, I think it's an awesome way to reinforce skills in a fun and unique way.

 "Just what we wanted!" 2009-12-27
By Kelly Harkins (Newark, DE USA)
My 28 month old received this for Christmas this week. I had done some research and put it on his wish list. I have had tons of success with LeapFrog products in my classroom (first grade teacher). Well, it was super easy to download/set-up program and books. He has the sample book, the Cars shapes book, and the Curious George colors. He loves them. He also got the house shaped carry case and he hasn't put it down yet. We sat down together and read through the books together, we used the Tag together, and he loves to use it alone.

I hope that they come out w/ more book titles. I realize that it is geared for pre-schoolers, but I would love more stories - not just one-word per page books.

"Cute and when it works is nice" 2009-12-27
By J. Artus (Yonkers, ny USA)
Just got this for my 2 1/2 year old son. I have a Mac so it took me about 5 minutes to get it running. It worked for the first 5 minutes. Once we turned it off and on again it did not work. The book pal does not read the book at all now. I download the audio a few times and still does not work. Try getting help from their customer services, but of course it must be through e-mail only.Due to the holidays I might get help within three days from now. So in the meantime,my little one is crying because he wants to play with it.. So if you just got one DO NOT trash the box it can with. Just in case you need to return it..

 "Disappointed" 2009-12-26
By K. Bennett
So far I am very disappointed in Tag Junior and Leap Frog. I've been trying for 2 1/2 hours to download audio for my daughter's new Tag Junior. The sample book worked fine yesterday, but now that I've actually gone to Leap Frog's site to download new content, I've lost everything.

I keep getting messages that say my Tag Junior needs updated. How exactly does a brand new product need updated???

Well, I follow the instructions for updating--which wipes out the content for the sample book--but then I get an error that says it can't connect to the Tag Junior. Please try again, which I've done repeatedly for the last two hours.

I understand it is the day after Christmas and a lot of other people are trying to access the LeapFrog site, but I would think Leap Frog has been doing this for long enough that they would be able to manage high traffic.

In addition, the battery door is too hard to close after you install the batteries or connect the USB cable. Instead of using a simple screw, they use a piece of plastic that you have to turn with a screwdriver. The first time, I tried to close it, the plastic screw was apparently not lined up correctly and the plastic is now bent.

"Better documentation and more storage space would be nice..." 2009-12-25
By G. Whitlock (Columbus, GA USA)
First off, I think the documentation provided with this device needs to be updated. The instructions were not clear, and one sentence was listed twice as a possible copy-paste error which should have been caught by during the QC process. My wife and I are tech-savy, but I think someone with less experience could be confused and possibly give up on downloading and configuring the LeapFrog Connect app.

Second, I wish the device has more storage space. The five book limit is silly when you consider how cheap storage is today.

Overall, it's not a bad product. My daughter likes it, and for [...]. I am not disappointed. It just took a little longer than I'd like to setup.
