Nice little ant farm. Works as advertised. My son comes back to it every 1-3 days for a peak to see what's going on, as he's been doing for over a month -- pretty good for him. The blue goo lit up is pretty cool. If I had it to do over again, my personal preference might be the traditional dirt farm. Ordered the "day before christmas" ants, and paid the extra buck or two, but, alas, the ants arrived a few days after Christmas. That's the fault of the ant supplier, not the product manufacturer.

I was a little hesitant to get this for my 7 year old, but after reading the reviews I was convinced to give it a try. This has been a delight to watch for the whole family. We have been taking pictures of the ants progress and watching them work. It is so amazing. It has been 5 days and they have built through out the whole farm already. Although the harvester ants do sting....you will not need to come in contact with them. When we ordered the ants, they came in a vile and they were practically frozen and they weren't moving. So we waited for them to start wiggling around a bit and then dumped them in. The lid is air tight and it is very hard to get the lid open. I doubt my son could get it open. Not that he even wants to. Everyone should do this at least once in their childs life. It is truly fascinating....

We bought this ant farm for our 4-year old son this year. We had been wanting to get him an ant farm for a while, and he was so excited to see what it was. I'm honestly not sure if he's enjoyed it more or if me & my husband have! We'll catch ourselves going into our son's room after he's asleep & just watching the ants at night -- the illuminated ant farm sheds enough light for a child's nightlight, and is amazing to watch at night!! We ordered the ants & they arrived quickly... and all alive! They quickly got to work & have been tunneling nonstop since we put them into the farm. We can't wait to see what the weeks will bring -- will they ever stop tunneling? Regardless, it's fun to watch and super fun for our little boy to show off to his friends that come over!! (My husband even wants one of these for his desk at work!! How cool!)

I bought this for my 2 sons (10 and 3) as a Christmas gift. I made sure that I had ordered the ants (they don't come with the ant farm- you have to send off for them)before Christmas so they would be included. I seriously never thought they would be this fascinating! We've only had it for a day and they have created tunnels and the kids are completely intrigued by it (and my husband and I are too!). It's very educational and we love to watch them work. I would HIGHLY recommend this for kids or adults!

This is a fun toy with a great learning experience. It is more difficult to work than a older child can usually do. Our kit came with older dried
"green ingredients" that we worked around. The bottom had caked so there was a gap where the ants seemed to make a easy home instead of tunneling.
Even with all this (and i would hope yours came with softer and newer ingredients) it was a great learning experience and something for the whole family to watch. It has been 4 months now and we are still watching these smart little creatures work and exist but will let them go in a few weeks to make a new home in the wild.
