 "Crammer for a gift" 2010-01-31
By Sharon Yarbrough (Louisiana)
I purchased this item (Crammer by Leap Frog) as a gift for my 7 year old nephew. He has been having problems with his school work and i thought it would help him to learn. I have no idea how well it performs.

 "Crammer" 2009-12-19
By Bobbie Howard (Nor Cal)
This was a gift for a ten year old and he loves it. He loves the MP3 feature. He is home schooled so his mom loves that she can add his studies to it. And I couldn't have been happier with the price!

"Don't do it. Save your money for an iPod Touch" 2009-12-05
By J. Weidner
Getting the crammer to connect and work with the Leap Frog software was extremely difficult. Although I finally got it to work, the overall experience was definitely not fun. The text size was quite small, leaving most of the screen blank.

I'd suggest that you save the money that you would spend on this item for an iPod touch. The iPod Touch can run most of the applications that also run on an iPhone but you don't have to pay a monthly fee. Or if you are willing to pay a monthly fee for a cell phone, make your next cell phone a "smart phone" like an Android phone or an iPhone that have tons of applications including study tools.

"Much Promise - Poor Results - Lots of Set-up Time" 2009-04-13
By C. Frost (Michigan)
I have liked earlier LeapFrog products for my 8 year old son, and I heard a lot of promising press about this product. But don't buy it! Yes like others have said, the display is too small, not backlit, and may I add.... Boring. It reminds me of a MacPlus I used 18 years ago. I think technology has advanced since then. Still I need to relay the worst part and that is the interface through the website. First it would not connect, and I found out why when I went to the FAQs there is a fix, (after downloading for a half hour) didn't work, but wait there is an alternate fix, hopefully for Vista but not labeled as such (another long download) and this one did work. I can now connect to the website and like everyone says in other reviews, everything takes too long to download and as for the MP3 instal yes that takes forever too. And when I sent a note to customer support, well the response was more complex then I have time for. All in all, I wasted $50(it can now be bought for half that), plus most of my Saturday, for a device I will soon quit updating, for an educational toy that my son will be too bored with to use. PS, this will not be on the shelves long enough to be supported a year from now. Did I mention don't buy it.

"Other Crammer complaints valid - plus it's slow" 2009-04-07
By Todd Sheridan (Salt Lake City, UT)
We've been Leapfrog supporters from the beginning, purchasing many of their previous products for our girls. They are a smart company creating family-oriented products that we have loved. We thought this one would be a no-brainer, and wanted to support educational electronic devices.

But this device is a pile of (insert bad thing here). It's so poorly designed and implemented. All of the complaints about the bad screen, font size, and volume level are valid. My daughter really wanted an MP3 player and we had hoped to combine that with an educational device, so the concept is great. But the audio is almost inaudible, even at full volume. And it's a royal pain to copy songs and educational materials to the device.

First, you have to use their custom interface, you can't just plug it into your computer, have a windows folder pop up, and copy mp3's over. NOOOO, you have to go through their silly interface, wait for it to convert the songs to the Crammer format (not MP3), and upload through what has to be a USB .0001 Interface.

Second, did you catch that the link is slow? Now, imagine a turtle crawling through molasses... it's WAY slower than that. It takes several minutes just to copy some flash cards (100k), imagine trying to copy 300mb worth of albums over... yep, it takes hours. It has the slowest transfer rate of any device I've ever seen. What were they thinking? Why not make it USB2 and let me fill up the very limited 1gb worth of memory in a few minutes?

We gave up and went and bought a tiny little MP3 player for $[...] and the girls love it. This Crammer is way too big to be an MP3 player anyway... it wouldn't fit in MY pocket, let alone the pockets of my 8 year old.

Use it indoors as an educational device... maybe. Or better yet, make some flash cards on 3x5 paper cards and have done with it. Or even better yet, spend time with your kids reviewing their studies in person!

Boo Leapfrog, booo!
