 "DO NOT BUY!!!!!" 2010-02-18
By Lacey Trumbo (Pinehurst, NC)
I have never written a product review before but I am so disgusted by this product I have to this time. We bought our first one for our son for Christmas '08. It lasted less than 30 days and broke. I would have given up on it but of course we'd invested in a few games so I returned it and got another one. This time I was smart and purchased the TRU buyer protection plan. That one broke and I got a gift card for a new one. A month later that one broke and I got a gift card for a new one. FInally got the 4th one at Thanksgiving and it worked for about 2 weeks. My son was NOT hard on these cyber pockets. IT was normal use by a 5 year old. To say I am disgusted by v.smile is an understatement. I finally gave up and sold the games on ebay for a huge loss. :(

 "Fun and Educational" 2010-02-09

My son loves this portable. He had the vtech vsmile system, and so he had a bunch of games that worked with the cyber pocket. It has good battery life and responsive controls. He takes it everywhere we go. Great product

"Battery problems, but fun toy..." 2010-02-05
By KT (Atlanta)
Like many others here, I have seen many battery problems with this item and have yet to figure out the exact problem. When I bought the first one, it worked flawlessly for months. Then the unit would periodically shut down, wouldn't turn on, I would replace batteries and it may or may not work. I tried moving the batteries around, messing with the contacts, lightly tapping the unit. It didn't seem to matter, sometimes it would power on, and sometimes not. And I just couldn't figure out why. New batteries would sometimes not work, then changing out the new batteries and it would work again. I thought the unit was defective so I exchanged it for another. To my despair, the new unit did the same thing, right out of the box! I really think the unit is shorting out batteries. I'll be doing some more tests to see if this is the case (test battery before using, then after the unit dies again). I also wondered if it had something to do with cartridges being put into and out of the unit. I'm not sure my son does this gracefully 100% of the time.

A lot of questions about this battery problem, but for those who like this game, and have the battery problem, continue to try new batteries, and eventually it will come back on. They may or may not last long, it's hit or miss. Sometimes it'll last for weeks of continuous play and sometimes not even right out of the battery box! Make sure NOT to use off-brand batteries. They DO NOT seem to work as well. I've gone thru 28 generic alkaline batteries in a row, only to give up and get Duracell. But even with Duracell and Energizer, it's hit or miss.

When ya find batteries that last, it's a GREAT toy. My 5 yr old son has learned a lot playing it as it encourages reading, problem solving, and math depending on the games. He started playing at 4 and still plays it occasionally. I ended up getting a DSi because of the unreliability, and he plays that religiously. But he still picks this up and plays with it when it's working.

I hope to update this soon when I get some time to test my theories!

"Toy breaks - Vtech will not replace" 2010-01-28
By M. Silveira
Like many others, we've gone through 2 vsmiles that stopped working without cause (one of them within 2 hours of opening the packaging!). Vtech did not acknowledge the problem as theirs and refused to replace the unit for free; instead they offered to give us a coupon to buy a new one for $35 (which is more than the price on Amazon). DON'T BUY THIS TOY

 "Still thinking it over..." 2010-01-07
By deal mom (Louisiana)
We purchased three of these for our 6, 5 and 3 year olds. They each love it and have played them a lot. I love that you can take them anywhere. I'm still thinking it over because two of them have stopped working for short periods then suddenly started working again... I'm not sure what the deal is but I've changed batteries out for no reason only to find that it will not start then hours later it will magically work again. Overall the kids really enjoy them when they operate correctly.
