"Good for kids, but needs more books" 2010-05-24
By D. J. Nardi (Washington, DC)
I totally agree with the first two reviews here: this is a good idea in need of more books. I bought this for my niece in Burma so she could learn English and she loves it. Unfortunately, it seems the company behind this product no longer makes this unit and has stopped making books for it. I hope they revive the book line soon - otherwise, I can't recommend getting this unit.

"WARNING: DO NOT BUY VIDEO PLUS! parts not available!" 2010-04-15
By heyjude09 (Iowa)
The 1-Star rating reflects long-term satisfaction with this product.

I bought the Story Reader Video PLUS barely a year ago (May 2009) and the wire that goes to the TV has disappeared. I just called the company to get a replacement wire (April 2010) and was told: they no longer make this product and parts are NOT available!!! Oddly enough, the company, Publications International, still shows this model on their website.

So if you buy this, there will be NO WARRANTY because it's no longer made. And if you lose a piece, the rest is basic garbage. I told the company I would never feel right about buying ANY of their products for fear something like this could happen again.

 "Story Reader Viideo+" 2010-02-12
By Chevette Gadson (Boynton Beach, FL)
My three year old niece really enjoys this toy. I just wish the stories and educational games were longer. They also need to create more stories compatible for this toy. It is really neat how it reads the story to the child.

"Don't be fooled - misleading packaging might leave you with useless books" 2010-01-05
By L. Bright
Overall, I was happy with the Story Reader Video +. My son, who is now 5, has used it since he was 3, but became bored with the few books that came with it. So I finally decided to buy more "Story Reader" books and actually bought a whole collection. I spent $30 on the books, just to open the package and find that the cartridge from the "Story Reader" books isn't compatable with the "Story Reader Video +" console. From what I can tell, there isn't even an adapter available. So now I am stuck with books (since the packaging is now gone), and will have to buy a "Story Reader" -- not the same as the "Story Reader Video +" in order to utilize these books. There was NOTHING on the packaging to tell you that these systems are different and incompatible. The logo on the package is the same, and systems look VERY similar, so one would naturally think they are the same. I feel ripped off and now I have a bunch of books my son won't be able to use. Finally, I don't want to even buy the Story Reader -- it doesn't seem as educational or fun as the Video Plus system. With the Video Plus system, it actually enabled him to see words highlighted on the screen and play additional games.

I blame the brand manager on this product for trying to dupe consumers into thinking the Story Reader books would work with any system by omitting helpful information like: "Only for use with the Story Reader, not the Video + system". !!

 "The controller was broke" 2009-04-26
By Terri L. Wang (Oologah, OK)
The controller was broke and when I called Amazon was told they couldn't replace and I could never find a phone number for the company I got it from. The "reader" part is great and my kids love it, but they are unable to play the games because the controller doesn't work...
