I did not know what to get him initially but never forgot how much he loved the original version on his 8th birthday. It felt a tad lazy buying this but it worked out perfectly. We spend some time trying to stump the device and were successful only once or twice out of the 50 or so tries. The toy demonstrates the use of logic quite well and makes the user really think about how the software works. I find it to be fun now and then especizlly when waiting or on car rides.

My son brought this toy on his weeks at boyscout camp. It was a fun activity for boys in the evenings and rainy days. It is so durable, it stood up to the activities of dozens of boys. As a homeschooler, I REALLY wanted a toy that taught cursive handwriting. It makes it so much more fun. So I was thrilled to get this toy and paid the $49 for it. But I was a little disappointed in the resolution of the screen, nothing like a leapster screen. For the price I would have expected a better screen. Plus, you can't write on the screen. This toy simply shows the letter being drawn, and the child can copy it on paper. A little disappointing for the price.

My 5 year old son went to Kindergarten and was so frustrated with learning to write. I immediatly got on line to find something to help. I quickly found See N' Write with the demo on line. My son found it fun and for some reason became really attached to learning his letters. He has it on his desk and often I will hear it being turned on so he can practice his letters. Try the demo (do a search for the product) and see if your child would enjoy it. If so, order it. I wasn't sorry that I did and I don't consider it a useless toy or a waste of money. He's been using it since 4 months now.

My daughter has had her Leap Pad since 2004 and she loves it. I purchased most of the phonics program and used them to reinforce lessons and now she is reading at early 3rd grade level. I have trained her to be careful with all her possessions so all her books are in good condition and work fine. Occasionally, the Pad gets confused, but hey, it really is a computer so you have to be patient. I usually just reinsert the cartridge and start again. I have a friend whose daughter has yanked off the stylus twice, but you can buy a replacement so your Pad is not worthless. I have even seen books taped and they still work. Sometimes you need to blow dirt or dust out of a cartridge as well. Remember, this is an electronic device! I heartily endorse any and all Leap Pad products.
