"We LOVE this toy! Great for AUTISM!" 2010-06-07
By J. M. McDonald (Houston, TX)
My 5 year old daughter has autism and some toys completely elude her. This one was so easy for her to learn, and she is just addicted to it. I can honestly say this is the first time we've bought something for her that she has not been able to put down. She loves to repeat the words and she enjoys the feedback she receives from us. It's 3-D, and has narration to accompany each picture. Ours works like a dream, I was sorry to hear that others didn't have the same experience. It's just fantastic and inexpensive to boot. We're taking it on a road trip from TX to FL and I know she'll be glued to it.

"Same Audio Problem as Everyone Else" 2010-02-19
By Joshua J. Steimle (Salt Lake City, Utah)
We just got this and we're having the exact same problems with sound / audio that everyone else appears to be having. I've tried the various fixes (sticking something behind the cartridge to push it against the four metal connections, leaving the cartridge open to achieve the same effect, etc., and nothing works. I'm going to try returning it and see if that works.

"shouldn't have to, but it's an easy fix" 2010-02-07
By R. Longman (Austin, TX United States)
I had the same problem with the sound reels that others mention - I even returned one. After looking at a few other reviews that described getting sound if the reel was held in place by a parent I tried adding a piece of cardboard (from the package of the reel) when the reel was in the slot, and this seems to fix the poor fit. View-Master needs to redesign, but in the meantime, an easy fix is available.

 "A disappointment" 2010-01-17
By S. Witten (Indiana)
If this product work it would be fabulous. I bought it for my son last year for Christmas. The demo disk worked in it at the store. It worked briefly on Christmas morning and very very intermittently after that. It isn't the batteries, it wasn't dropped and there are no obvious defects it just doesn't work. My son loved it and still brings it to me asking me to fix it but I can't. Do not buy.

"A Workaround for Sound Issues" 2010-01-12
By tensity1 (Las Vegas, NV)
Having fond memories of View Masters as a boy and seeing there was now sound and a dinosaur pack of reels, I decided to get this for my boy.

I was a bit leery, since I had read all the reviews about sound problems, but I decided to take my chances, and it would still be fun to look at, even without the sound.

Well, no luck--the demo reel sound was fine, but the dinosaur pack only worked for one reel and then I got the "blipping" sound meaning the unit was having problems reading the sound files from the cartridge. Enter my wife with the easy fix. Hopefully it will work for others.

It's a matter of seating--there needs to be good contact between the metal contacts, so pushing the cartridge away from your face (as you look into the toy) ensures good contact and working sound. Well, as another reviewer suggested--not exactly an acceptable solution. The easy fix is to keep open the green reel cartridge/sound module before seating it (as if you've taken out a reel and didn't close it--I don't mean crack open the actual sound module). Just don't click it closed before seating. This gives enough pressure to where good contact is made. Haven't had any sound problems since. The only issues with this workaround are that the toy should've been better made in the first place, and if the toy is turned upside down, the extra reels may fall out, but this works great for us, considering we knew going in there may be sound problems.
