I bought this about 4 years ago when my daughter was 1. It was really great while I was cooking dinner. My daughter would bring a little step stool into the kitchen and sit on it and learn her letters sounds and words. I don't know exactly how much it contributed to her learning but by 18 months she knew all her letters and sounds and by about 30 months she could read pretty well. My son is now 3 and can read. He also used this toy almost daily from about 18 months until, well, now! Both my kids could use this independently and it kept their interest. It has held up very well over the years, and even with almost daily use the batteries inly had to be changed, uh, maybe 3 times a year... if that. It has been dropped many times and even survived a juice spill. We lost a letter A (which is a vital letter!) and we were able to buy a replacement on Ebay for $1. I would definitely say one of the best toy buys I've made!

I bought this for my 2 year old. He loves to be in the kitchen with me and previously spent most of that time putting up ABCs magnets on the frig and then scattering them onto the floor. Eventually we ended up with an abridged alphabet, as well as a not so happy Mommy stepping and tripping over letters while attempting to make dinner. This was the perfect solution. Not only does it encourage him to keep the magnets off the floor, but he actually likes to put in different letters and hear their sounds. My only complaint with this set is all the letters are lower case however I've read that other Leap Frog magnet letters work with this- and they have upper case letters.
I will caution I feel this is more appropriate for an older child- preschool age. But I figured we'd grow into it and as long as he has keeps an interest in "learning" the letters, I didn't mind. Since he isn't' able to make words on his own we play the 'find a letter' game. Initially it was tricky but thankfully I only know so many three-letter words, so he's learning the letters. We also play the color game with them- find all the yellow letters and so on. Or counting game- can you find three red letters and so on.
So while it's not necessarily geared to be a toy for a child so young in my opinion, you can easily make it a toy they can grow with if you're creative.

I bought this on sale for my son (who is child #4) at Wal-Mart cause they were switching to the new design. My son loved playing with the fridge magnets at my sisters house so for his 2nd birthday I got it for him. It has been less than a month and he can identify 15 out of the 26 letters in the alphabet and he just turned 2. I would recommend this product for anyone with kids from 2 to 5. I am so happy with this product!!! I wish I would have had this for my other 3 kids.

I was secretly hoping that this would entertain and educate my 4yo child without taking up my time. You definitely need to play this machine with your child if you want your child to learn. Unfortunately, the voice is very unclear. "f" sounds like "s". "hen" sounds like "fen". Heck, even I have to guess what word/letter the machine is trying to spell or say.
Also, my daughter gets disappointed when she wants to spell words longer than 3 letters and can't. Can't even spell "zoo" because there's only one "O".
The only good news is that my daughter is paying more attention to spelling and to word/letter sounds than usual. Otherwise, this toy would only get one star from me.

My 3 year old received this toy as a gift today and we were happy as we have liked the Leapfrog products she has so far but the Leapfrog Fridge Words horrified me. Why? because my child is running around the house yelling "B#TCH" because thats what the Leapfrog fridge words taught her to say, rather than "Bit" This is not a joke review, you can see my video of it on youtube. I immediately contacted Leapfrog customer service and they were very unconcerned even though I played the toy saying the word for them twice. When my kid gets kicked out of preschool for saying a word like that, are they going to take responsibility? Could have at least got a half hearted "sorry" I would recommend staying away from this particular Leapfrog product. Seems like it may have been a good toy if it didn't swear at me.
