The Good: A durable, easy-to-use, cost-effective digital camera that introduces toddlers to photography.

In a Nutshell: A fun camera that will keep youngsters busy taking high-quality photos.

The Kidizoom is a working digital camera designed just for children.

The Kidizoom features a vibrant, colorful design that is both durable and easy to use. View larger.
Colorful and Durable for Toddler-Age Kids
Featuring large purple rubber grips on either side, the Kidizoom Plus won't slide or slip, whether it is in your child's hands or on a tabletop. Clearly labeled orange buttons make it easier for kids to understand the camera's various functions (e.g. the zoom-in button features a large tree, while the zoom-out button features a smaller tree). The photo editing software is easy to install and requires only very basic mouse/computer skills and a willingness to experiment.

While an adult should assist in replacing the four AA batteries or connecting to TV or PC, the Kidizoom ensures that taking high-resolution pictures and making movies will be a snap for children three years and up.

A Child's Very First Photos
Getting started with the Kidizoom is easy. Kids will quickly identify the basic functions, such as the power button and shutter button. Switching from photo to video mode is a breeze with the oversized, rubber-grip activity selector dial. With a little trial and error, kids should also be able to utilize the four-directional cursor button to add wacky kaleidoscope and underwater effects to their pictures.

Among the camera's other features are a large, 1.8-inch color LCD screen, optical viewfinders for both eyes, and a flash with a range of up to six feet. A small built-in microphone on the top of the camera records sound for movies.

As an added feature, the Kidizoom includes five challenging and fun games. The TV connector cables allow kids to enjoy the games on the big screen. Though the games themselves are unlikely to impress those kids who are already familiar with other portable game consoles, they offer a fun break between photo projects.

Greater Storage Capacity Keep Kids Busy for Hours
With a 256 MB of built-in memory, kids can take up to 500 high-resolution photos, or up to eight minutes of video, before having to transfer the files to a computer. For greater storage capacity, the Kidizoom also features an SD memory card slot (memory card not included).

Develop Photo-Editing Skills Early
The included Photo Editor software is compatible with Mac and PC, and features a selection of graphics and animation that can be added to photos. Some of the photo-editing features might initially overwhelm toddlers, but given a little time and instruction, they'll be impressing their friends with custom pictures.

With a few simple clicks of the mouse, a simple photo of a friend can be embellished with flowery borders, animals, a wig and glasses. Adding animation can turn the photo into an underwater scene or a spinning globe. The wide selection of special effects makes Kidizoom a fun and rewarding introduction to the world of photography.

The included Photo Editing software allows kids to add wacky photo effects, animation, and voiceover narration. Five built-in games provide added amusement between photo projects. Adult assistance is required to install four "AA" batteries (not included).

 "Vtech Digital Camera" 2009-12-30

We purchased this camera for our 4 year old grandson. He began using it after his dad put the new batteries in. It's so simple to use even a caveman or 4 year old can do it.

 "Great Kid's Camera" 2009-12-27
By Deann Ragsdale (Cincinnati, Ohio)
We got this camera for our two year old (32 months) for Christmas, actually the pink version. She LOVES it. It is exactly what she wanted. Sure, the pictures aren't great-but 90% of them are of the floor. In her mind, she is taking pictures just like mommy-which is what she wanted. She poses her baby dolls and takes pictures of us, her friends and her parents. This camera seems to be quite durable, spends a significant amount of time on the floor, and survived a bunch of banging at the courtesy of our 14month old friend. Battery life appears decent, especially since is still has the manufacturer batteries, I tooled around with it before giving it to DD, and she has been playing for a few days-forgetting to turn it off almost every time. We don't play any video games, or take video with it though.

My only 'complaint' would be that it does too much for a three year old, but our daughter is at the bottom of the age bracket. BONUS-it is actually 2.0 Megapixels, and I thought is was only 0.3. Read a lot of reviews before purchasing and that was one big complaint of others.

Summary-it does exactly what we wanted-takes a beating, survives, and our little girl can 'take picture'.

"Consider your child's age/needs/wants in a camera before purchasing n leaving a bad review." 2009-12-27
By H. Chang
This product is wonderful.

First off, let me just say that if you are looking for great picture quality, please look elsewhere (even many adult digital camera's give crappy photo). You have to understand that children in general cannot take a good photo. Their little hands shake, they jump while they press the buttons, and no matter how much you tell them to stay still when taking a picture, the truth is, they won't. THEY R KIDS, what do u expect? The max megapixel is 2.0 and the lowest is 0.3. Make sure it's on the highest.

DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU EXPECT YOUR CHILD TO BE TAKING NIKON QUALITY SHOTS WITH IT. I've own 6 digital camera's in the last 4 years and I can tell you myself that only two of them was worthy of good, quality pictures (my trusty Nikon and my little Lumix :-), so don't expect too much.

AND 36 months should be the BARE minimum for this product. My daughter is 2 months away from 5 and it took her a day to figure out most of the functions. My two year old son will just press any button and turn the dials---and then get very frustrated at why the pics don't come out.

Second, I HAVE A MAC AND A PC. You don't necessary have to have a PC to download the pics or videos. You can take the SD card out of the camera and insert it into any SD card reader (many of us have adult digital camera's or printer's that take the SD CARDs.) SImply plug those into a computer of your choice and WA-LAA! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Of course you will need to do any editing, like adding the frames, funny faces, etc onto the pics before you take the card out since you won't have software to add those.

My daughter loves this camera. SHE LOVES THE VIDEO FUNCTION MORE THAN ANYTHING. She films her little dolls and pretends they are talking to each other and when she watches it, she laughs and laughs until she is just overboard with sillyness. She also loves how she can make funny faces, put frames on the pics, and even have animation through her videos. There r also 4 games on there for them to play. I am so looking forward to our two hour road trip with the camera to keep her busy.

AS FAR AS BATTERIES GO: Yes, it sucks a lot of juice--but that's because they r always playing w/ it. I read reviews of ppl saying it would only last one afternoon but my daughter was able to get almost 3 days worth and she had it on a lot, with the batteries that came with the camera.

YOU CAN BUY DURACELL RECHARGEABLE AA's for this. I already had a bunch that I had bought to use with the leapster's we have. WORKS JUST FINE.

I really wished some ppl really took the time to research this product, read the manual, allowed their kids to play with it more, and try over-the-counter rechargeable batteries before they gave their reviews and low ratings on this product. It's a wonderful product and I wish I had bought it sooner.

"I agree with the other person who said disregard bad reviews!!" 2009-12-26
By "Stay at home mom of two" (Lancaster, PA)
I was so scared to get this camera for my 4 year old daughter because of the reviews I was reading. I was concerned that it wasn't going to be a 2.0 megapixels and that every photo was going to be bright and blurry. IT IS A 2.0 MEGAPIXEL (there is a setting in the tools to change it to the 0.3 mode). I am impressed with the 2.0 quality!!! Now mind you it is a child's digital camera and like the other person said you shouldn't even think of comparing it to an adult's. My daughter has had it for 24 hours and so far has taken a variety of different quality photos. Some are great and some are blurry. I am using the camera to teach her about photography, so she learns to be conscience of being still while holding the camera and taking a picture. But she is 4 years old and thinks a blurry photo is great!! We have already uploaded the photos she's taken to Facebook and they are fine quality for viewing. It's not really too complicated for her to use even though there are a lot of buttons. If she was 3 yrs. old I'd say she wouldn't be able to figure it out, but she quickly figured out where to find the games mode and has been playing them like crazy!! All she needed was one lesson on what the buttons do and she was on her way competent to use the camera all on her own. I LOVE THIS CAMERA! I am playing with this camera a lot myself because it is tons of fun!! We made my daughter a pirate like the sample photos. I can't believe how much it costs now!!! I got it for $10 or $20 less and it was a great buy compared to the Fisher Price, which had worse reviews than this camera.

Don't be afraid!! BUY THIS CAMERA!! You won't regret it :)

 "Mac Owners beware" 2009-12-26
By J. Kee (Chicago, IL)
My daughter received this for Christmas. Although advertised as Mac compatible, this does not include the Mac software and the website states the software will be available next month. We cannot download and edit the Christmas photos she took yesterday. Deceptive practices by the manufacturer. What a shame, this is going back to Amazon.
