This puzzle has a picture on the board that signifies each letter. When a letter is placed in its proper spot it says, "A is for apple" type of thing. I wish it just said A. No need to convolute what should be a just simple lesson. My children know what the picture is, they just need to learn their letters. I think they get bored and bothered by the unnecessary talk this puzzle makes. Otherwise this puzzle is good quality, which is why I did not give it a bad rating.

We usually like Melissa and Doug products, so I was hoping the poor reviews were just really critical. Unfortunately, this toy is very disappointing. The puzzle itself seems pretty durable to me - that's about the only good thing I have to say about it. As stated by others, this works by a light sensitive insert in the puzzle in the letters, so when you place the letter in its spot, the light is covered and it activates the sound. Well, this would be fine if a little one were able to put it together without covering any other letter at the same time. My 2 year old is of course just trying to learn letters, so he'll try a couple out before he finds the right "fit." This means the puzzle will say whatever letter he hits - whether its right or not. It's also hard to understand. Yes, it will make noise if the letters aren't covered because of light hitting those sensors, so it must always be put together or covered. This would be find for a 5 year old, but it's kind of missed its mark at that point. There are many other puzzles out there for the kiddos that are much better than this one.

The letters easily mark up or rub off. Only a sticker coating. The little picture that is revealed "P is for Pretzel" etc is hard to make out what it is. There is no on or off switch and if you're missing a letter piece the puzzel will sound off on it's own when you turn the light off/on or place another object on top of it.
There are so many other ABC learning toys out there. This is one you can skip!

My 22 month old daughter loves puzzles and can put them together without any help.. and this is just great for a daily dose of ABC's.

This puzzle definitely reinforces language development, just make sure to store it in a dark box as it is light sensored and will be quite noisey if not properly stored.
