I was expecting to learn something about FM radios from this. It is basically an antenna, an earphone, everything else you need to build an AM radio, and an FM module that snaps in. The manual says the FM module is too touchy to be built by the customer, but it is a few resistors and capacitors. There isn't much point to buying this over an AM only kit without getting to learn something you can reproduce. As usual with these kits, there isn't much math, theory, or educational value to them. Just a short manual that tells you how to put it together. I really don't know anything more about how to design a radio circuit than when I started. I can kind of hear one FM station amongst a ton of really loud buzzing and static. I really think that the kit would have turned out better if they had let me build the FM module and explained how to make fine adjustments to it. That would have been both educational and would have resulted in me having a functional product for my money.
I'm not saying it is a total ripoff, but if you want to learn something, get the book Make: Electronics by Charles Platt, do all the projects, then attempt to reproduce this kit with standard components. They were nice enough to provide everything you need to know to replicate both the FM module and the whole rest of the radio circuit, albeit without anything about how to calibrate the FM module.

My 5 year old son enjoyed working on this radio kit with his dad. For a child who needs to know how everything works, this was a perfect educational toy. The only drawback is the radio does not travel well - lacks a cover. Also, don't expect to get too many channels. I think we were only able to pick up one.

I bought this solar educational kit for my son 4th grade school science project. After reading the reviews from the others, I was skeptical about the product. Since this is the only solar educational kit on Amazon and the price is reasonable right, we decided to buy it. We received the product in two days. The instruction is straight forward and easy that my son can do it by himself without my help. We also bought the spot flash light for about $10 from Home Depot to use it as a sunlight for indoor. This worked really well for the fan, but for the light bulb you need to use the sun light as well. Overall, this product is good for young kid science school project. My son really enjoyed it.

This set is exactly the same as the Radioshack Model 277-0011 "Solar Deluxe Educational Kit". As the other reviewer stated, this is poor. After returning one set for a defective solar panel, the second set seems to have the same problem. It is difficult to setup due to having to use the wrench. Compared to their Snap Circuits SC-300 (which is excellent), I don't know why the company failed to use simple snap modules.

Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration there, but really, this toy can't hold a candle to the Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 Educational kit by the same company.
For starters, this one requires a screwdriver and spanner to set up, and it's extremely unlikely that a typical eight year old will be able to do the (few) projects without adult help. The instruction manual begins with line drawings and schematics for connecting circuits in series and in parallel, and continues with the calculation and formulation for such things as "how many rows of solar cells are needed to make a solar panel work for a solar musical unit of 4.5V 100mA"
After they make your head spin (without the help of a solar panel), when you get to page 10, they helpfully add "If you do not want to make any calculation, just skip and follow the simple instructions below", which is followed by a series of black and white illustrations with captions like "No.2 screw connected to No.4 screw with jumper wire"
After you get all this done, you need to ensure that the panel is in direct sunlight. You can apparently use a 100W bulb 5 inches away from the panel, but only for 3 minutes, as the heat may melt the plastic frame. (!)
We connected the panel to the motor and fan today, and put the panel on a sunny window sill. I'd like to say we were blown away, but as the kit includes no form of storage for the charge, every time a cloud passed over the sun we were out of the flying fan and into the fiery heat of the day.
You can also connect small appliances depending on the required voltage and amperage (up to 4.5V or up to 300mA), but without a battery and charge controller it won't be very effective.
While this kit has the right idea at heart, they need to work on the presentation (looks cheap), the ease of set up for the target audience (from 8 years old), the instruction manual, and above all, they need to offer a complete solar set-up that can actually make the projects work effectively.
This one is not likely to be a favorite for anyone of any age

I got this yesterday. For 8 and up. It is the greatest toy I ever had! It's like LEGO, a new toy every day. I bought this for my 9 year old nephew's birthday. My sister tells me he really loves it. In fact she said he liked it so much that he wanted to take it everywhere with him. She said there are a lot of little pieces to it though. She accidently threw some away while she was cleaning because she didn't realize what they went to, but luckily he can still use it, because there are a lot of different projects to build. If it makes him happy, it makes me happy.

This product looks wonderful, came highly recommended, and looked very durable. I purchased 2 each, one for my 8-year-old and one for my 9 1/2-year-old grandsons for Christmas. I also bought two of the Snap Circuits SC300 and 2 of the Wild Planet Hyper-Dash. The boys were not at all interested in the Snap Circuits. They could not figure the Hyper Dash and neither could I. I spent $180 when all was totaled and the boys have not used any of the items. It was very disappointing. My intent was to buy very interesting toys that would bring them enjoyment and help them learn something new. The youngest thanked me when they were ready to leave and said, "Grandma, for our birthdays we would like Lego's."
Very nice items, but not attractive to my grandsons.

We bought this for our very curious 6 year old son, he so loved it. He has been playing with it for hours over many days. He keeps rebuilding it differently to see how the circut works. I am planning on buying another kit so he can put them together. It is great because it is strong and sturdy and easy for him to snap together. Our 14 year old son loves it too.
