I got this yesterday. For 8 and up. It is the greatest toy I ever had! It's like LEGO, a new toy every day. I bought this for my 9 year old nephew's birthday. My sister tells me he really loves it. In fact she said he liked it so much that he wanted to take it everywhere with him. She said there are a lot of little pieces to it though. She accidently threw some away while she was cleaning because she didn't realize what they went to, but luckily he can still use it, because there are a lot of different projects to build. If it makes him happy, it makes me happy.

This product looks wonderful, came highly recommended, and looked very durable. I purchased 2 each, one for my 8-year-old and one for my 9 1/2-year-old grandsons for Christmas. I also bought two of the Snap Circuits SC300 and 2 of the Wild Planet Hyper-Dash. The boys were not at all interested in the Snap Circuits. They could not figure the Hyper Dash and neither could I. I spent $180 when all was totaled and the boys have not used any of the items. It was very disappointing. My intent was to buy very interesting toys that would bring them enjoyment and help them learn something new. The youngest thanked me when they were ready to leave and said, "Grandma, for our birthdays we would like Lego's."

We bought this for our very curious 6 year old son, he so loved it. He has been playing with it for hours over many days. He keeps rebuilding it differently to see how the circut works. I am planning on buying another kit so he can put them together. It is great because it is strong and sturdy and easy for him to snap together. Our 14 year old son loves it too. This toy is excellent. The only real quibble I have is that a couple of the diagrams are slightly hard to read because wires cover the capacitor numbers in the diagrams. But otherwise, this is very simple to put together, very straightforward, and great fun. The rover itself is quite sturdy (though loud when rolling) and rolls over small objects with ease. It's great for chasing your dogs around the living room. If you're looking for something more advanced than Lego, but less advanced than the Mindstorms lego, this is it.

Where to begin with this thing?



My kid (8 y.o. girl) who loves "science stuff" has started getting into Snap Circuits, specifically the SC-300 kit. She expressed an interest in the standard RC Rover, but I thought the voice box and disc shooter were worthwhile upgrades for the fun factor.



One nitpick to start off:

The picture posted for this item does not really represent what it looks like. Yes, it has the Dome contraption and the yellow tanklike bottom, but the components on the back are not representative of what comes in the box. For example the big yellow speaker is not present and the green box is also not there. The red RF receiver box is nowhere near as large. What you get is functionally the same with a slightly different mix of components and the number of "experiments" went from 40 to 63, with two bonus experiments if you have an SC-300 kit or higher.



The kid showed a passing interest in it when it was with all the other Christmas loot, but the first experiment we did was the RC disc shooter. Thus followed an hour of playtime of having the vehicle hunt down and fire harmless foam discs at the cat (the cat enjoyed chasing down the discs as fast as the thing could be reloaded, too). Followed by hunting the wife, and then I fell victim to the rover's discs of death.



This thing is built quite sturdy and makes lots of gear noise when it runs. It has a headlight and flashing red "eyes". It plays beeping musical tunes and it can record and playback voices.



What to nitpick about it? Just a few things:

1. The SC-300 and other SnapCircuit kits come in a box to organize and store all the stuff. This comes in a box, but the box isn't suited for storage.

2. There is no "battery saver" for either the remote or the vehicle. It would be nice if the remote at least shut off after not being used for a while.

3. The remote uses a telescoping metal antenna, so one has to be careful not to break it.

4. One of the items - a 2-snap "wire" segment had a broken snap that won't stay attached. There is a card included where the customer can call the vendor about missing/broken parts and I plan to give them a call about it after the holidays.



In the end, this is a great toy (more toy-ish than the kits at least) and very entertaining and fun. Highly recommended if you have a kid who loves to tinker and build stuff.

I gave this as a birthday gift to my 9-year old son. With the box gift-wrapped, he initially thought it might be a board game but it was a lot heavier than most board games. His birthday was on a Wednesday which was a school day so we waited until Saturday morning to open it. He woke up at 5am and we started unpacking it. The first projects using a miniature lamp and motor with a propeller got him interested. We quickly breezed through the other experiments. He told me how they used a solar cell in his 3rd grade science class the day before which prompted him to jump to the experiment that uses the solar cell and see a more complex circuit in action that uses the solar cell for power.



I quickly realized that this is a logic extension to the LEGO blocks and Bionicle action figures that my son has been playing with for years. You can follow the projects to build preconceived circuits and later use your own experience and imagination to build your own circuits. There's a sense of gratification at the completion of a project and watching it work.



I'm an electrical engineer myself so I was able to explain to him in more details about the components and the basic operations. I showed him how to quickly build circuits without the use of the plastic grid punch/snap board. I like how the component symbols are illustrated on the parts which will prepare him to read schematic diagrams. I'm excited just thinking about how much fun, enjoyment and learning he'll get from using this.

 "Electric Lego" 2009-12-26

We received this set as a gift for our son. Although it seems to be well built I haven't found anything that teaches the child what it is they are working with. There are numerous components that you assemble on a plastic peg board according to a picture diagram. There is a brief explanation of what you are making but nothing describes how the components are interacting in the circuit. It's kind of like Legos where you look at the picture and your collection of components to mimic what it is you're supposed to be building. If all the componets are working (we had one that wasn't) and you assembled it correctly... what? You haven't really learned anything except how to follow a picture diagram.



We have issues with the peg board and snap components. As you assemble, the tension can be enough to cause some of the snap-on components to pop off. Every so often you have to stop and check all of the connections, snapping them back to the board or each other.



The set is beautiful and well ordered but my son lost interest very quickly. I worked with it for a while and found it had a bad capacitor component, although it looks perfectly OK. When used in any of the circuits it causes odd results, which was frustrating for my son. The slide resistor works but is not smooth, also affecting experiments.



I think any child over 12 will be bored with this model SC-300.

I have a 6 year old son who loves building anything! This toy is fantastic. He is having the best time with it. With little upfront instruction, he was able to figure out how to use the diagrams in the very detailed booklet to create his own circuits. With simple motorized parts, a speaker, and additional sound boxes he is having a marvelous time creating different circuits. He has even started his own experiments with the layouts to attempt new things. This one of the very best toys he has ever had and I am quite critical and particular.

This was one of my daughter's favorit present this Christmas. She is 6, and although the package mentions 8+ years she is more than capable to build the projects herself. She needed some help the first couple of times to understand the logic, but it did not take her long to figure out how to build an AM radio on her own by looking at the pictures. It is a joy to see how proud she is after completing a project.



One of the best educational toys I have seen. A great success and we will be back for more!

Most of the reviews cover this pretty well, just some things I'd add:



If you remember those sets where there was a board with all these springs on it and you had short lengths of wire and some loose electronic components - one of those 100-in-one or 500-in-one electronic kits from Radio Shack, this is pretty much the same thing with one major difference:



It snaps together much like lego, making this kit accessible to a much younger crowd. So if your child can read simple diagrams and can snap together some components, he or she can have a working AM radio or noise generator in a few minutes. Or she can wire up the motor and spin the copter blade into the air so the cat can chase after it. After a while my kid started going through the project book on her own and was building circuits to bring to us to demonstrate what they did.



The box is great since it keeps the pieces and booklets organized.



A fantastic toy. Also, don't forget there are upgrade kits that can add more components that can make an SC-300 into an SC-500 or SC-750.

I got one of these for my 8 year old partly out of nostalgia. I had one of the kits that used springs and wires when I was a kid. I have great memories of building lie detectors, radio stations, burglar alarms, etc as a child.

I saw the snap version and thought it would suit an 8 year old much better than the kit I had as a child. That is exactly how it worked out. He has so much pride and such a sense of accomplishment every time he completes his "experiments". The illustrations are very well done. The kit is definitely a "beginner" electronics kit. Think legos with circuits inside. Which is perfect for the 8-10 yr range I think it is suited.



Older children/adults might want to consider a more tradition kit. But for basic introduction to electronics and younger (or older) fingers that might have problems with the wires and springs in the more advanced kits this design is perfect.



I have SOME concerns over my son creating short circuits or other conditions that would destroy some of the components. With the traditional kits replacing something would be pretty straightforward. With the enclosed modules in the snap kits the whole module would need replaced. I'm sure sooner or later we will be ordering a replacement. If the company is responsive and the replacement cost is reasonable I will consider it a non-issue.



We thought we had a bad component recently. Consulting the manual it has a variety of troubleshooting circuits it illustrates so you can check individual components yourself. Great! Excellent educational opportunity and wonderful way to provide support for "bad" components. The transistor ended up testing fine and when he rebuilt the failed "experiment" it worked fine. He rightly assumed that he probably had something hooked up wrong the first time.

That's right, this kit is teaching my 8 year old child the proper way to troubleshoot AND good scientific method. I wish some of the high-paid professional electronics technicians I work with would revisit the basics that this kit is teaching my son!



If you have a curious child - they will absolutely LOVE this kit and you will be thrilled with what it teaches them.
